He retired from full time clinical work in 2018 to devote more time to his various medical and music projects in Ukraine. He first came to Ukraine in May 2002 , and since then has held small group masterclasses in airway management mainly in Ivano Frankivsk and Ternopil regions. In doing so , he has had the opportunity to write several feature articles in the UK based medical press on anaesthesia in Ukraine, and with his close contacts with industry, has been able to donate in excess of £1.5 million of anaesthesia/surgical equipment to various hospitals throughout Ukraine.
From 2004 John M Allwood has run a successful exchange project for Ukrainian anaesthetists to visit his hospital in London.
